I know a black man in his early 20’s from Zimbabwe. He lived in America for a couple of years before moving here (Australia), and he says that the USA is backwards in a lot of ways.
The reasons he cited were:
You still use the imperial measurement system.
You drive on the right side of the road, different to all other countries.
You are the only country in the world that still routinely practices circumcision. Despite the fact it’s now substantiated that there’s no medical reason for doing so, and it has no practical benefit whatsoever. You preach that America is the land of the free, yet you mutilate baby boy’s penises the minute they are born. Not exactly freedom of choice now is it?
Your pronunciation of many words is different from the rest of the world.
Your women are bizarre.
They behave more like men than women.
He also said the way a lot of married couples relate to each other is more like the way a mother relates to a child, not a pair of adults who are supposed to love each other. (I think he meant the way the husband has to ask permission for anything he wants to do, every time he wants go out etc.)
Your family court system. He was astonished at women’s liberation, and the way a woman can divorce a man, keep his house, and get an ongoing share of his income.
Your living in a society that rips fathers out of their children’s lives as fast as it can be arranged, if the mother decides so.

I agree with most points except for one: in most civilized countries in the world you drive on the right side, not on the left. This is the case in every country in Europe except for the UK.

I’ve lived in both countries and I’d say they are both pretty screwed up, each in their own way. The English speaking countries are all very similar, USA, UK, Canada and Australia. Guys get shafted by marriage in all of them.
The only glimmer of hope in Australia is that MRA groups are starting to get some political traction and are at least being listened to. Time will tell whether it does any good in the long run.
Personally, I wouldn’t marry your average woman from either country.

Driving on the left or right doesn’t matter.
The thing you want to avoid is what happens on some Caribbean islands like St. Thomas — they drive on the left, but the cars are American, so the steering wheel is also on the left.
So instead of the driver sitting near the center of the road, he’s all the way over on the left edge.

Same in Cyprus (on the Turkish side), I hear it causes accidents all the time.
Driving on the left is what’s abnormal by the way, given that the automobile was invented in Germany and mass produced in the US – in both of which people drive on the right.

While my professors may not intend for it to be so, I have to admit that the more I learn about the world via anthropology and history, the luckier I feel to be an American. Other countries may be nice to visit, but I’m no longer sure I’d ever be willing to permanently leave the US.

The way I see it is other countries may be more corrupt in terms of bribing officials etc, but the USA just has the worst laws. So technically, we may not be breaking the “law” as much, but our laws are simply unethical.

No doubt about it. I’ll add that the USA is a military superpower and a technological superpower. It is without a doubt the best place in the world to make money. I’m the first to acknowledge that Australia is effectively the 51st state. But it’s like the MRA in California fighting with the MRA in Texas, saying we’ll lead and you follow.
I just don’t think getting pissy over which side of the road a country drives on matters much. What worries me more is that a poster like batshit can submit a post like this and people divide into factions. It’s the same as posting a provocative religious or racial statement and watching the group fall apart into factions.

I started compiling a list, but to be succinct I’ll simply say I love all the options I have here. An example would be skydiving. Few developing nations have the infrastructure for it. Also, even the relatively poor here can lively fairly well compared to many people around the world. If you know of any countries that would be better, that one can go to and make enough money there to support a lifestyle comparable to or better than in the US (rather than having to be ready to retire), I’m all ears (or eyes, as it may be).

America… the world’s leading terrorist nation (finances terrorists and does terrorism- 9-11- an inside job- Saud/Bush family ploy to get oil fields of Iraq as an excuse to protect the nation following the terrorist attacks.)
America… the world’s leading invader and thief of natural resources of foreign nations (i.e. Iraq- they said they were only going there to ‘remove’ Saddam, well, you did it, now get the FUCK OUT!)
America… the only place where an idiot can get elected twice. (now more like a dictator, killing his own people in a needless war)
America… the world’s leading debtor nation that one day will implode because it can’t meet the payments. (as it spends like there is no tomorrow)
America… the land that spends on weapons the entire budget of other nations, yet has no money to help poorer nations, nor does it forgive them their debt (they have paid the original amount, they are just struggling with the interest payments)
And finally,
America… the land that has the worlds biggest stockpiles (Russian stocks doubtful) of nuclear weapons, yet jumps and makes a big fuss if a third world country starts a nuclear weapons program and hits them with sanctions.
It urges them to get rid of their weapons, yet they (USA) won’t set an example and do the same- first.
In short,
America SUCKS, come live in Australia, the lucky country… or at least what’s left of it following idiot Howard’s government.

Except for the part about “America sucks” and the bit on helping other nations (a lot of aid can do more harm than good, and I’d often prefer the government not get involved), I generally agree, and I have no problem with Australia. America is essentially the only country that can currently afford the excesses you mention. How far that will continue into the future remains to be seen.

No State income tax or State sales tax, only some cities have a city tax.

Erm … want to restrict your comments to the particular aussie who’s offended you? I’m Aussie and I know damn well we depend on America, which is why I take such an interest in American politics/economy.
But I’ll suggest the USA’s interest in protecting us has a little to do with the Uranium and other minerals in the ground, and the geo-strategic positioning of Aus. They have military bases here. It’s in their interest as much as ours.
